Historical Abuse at Care Homes in Northern Ireland: The Claim Process Explained

30 March 2015

The inquiry into historical institutionalised abuse in Northern Ireland known as the HIA inquiry was set up in 2013 to investigate child abuse in residential institutions in Northern Ireland over a 73 year period, up to 1995. A total of 13 Northern Ireland institutions are being investigated.

The Inquiry, sitting at Banbridge Courthouse, continues to hear of the nature of a number of horrific incidents of abuse against young children. One victim was praised by the Inquiry’s Chairman for making “considerable physical effort” to give evidence. The Inquiry learnt that as a young boy he was scalded by boiling water after being assaulted by a nun at a Belfast children’s home. The Inquiry is chaired by Sir Anthony Hart. It includes an examination of abuse claims at Nazareth House and Nazareth Lodge. The homes were run by the Sisters of Nazareth, who have repeated an earlier apology to all those abused in their care.

The Inquiry has also heard evidence of abuse at homes involving the De la Salle order including Rubane House, Kircubbin and Kincora.
