Case Study – Death due to blood clot following leg surgery after fall from ladder

HHD solicitor: Fiona Sterritt, Partner, specialising in medical negligence claims

Settlement: Approved by the court

What happened: Mr C fell at work and sustained injuries to both legs. He was admitted to hospital and had surgery which rendered him bedridden for a period of time. Unfortunately he was discharged without proper blood thinning medication.  Despite being under review by the hospital and attending for physiotherapy he suffered a pulmonary embolism which caused his death.

How HHD solicitors helped: After a coroner’s inquest the family successfully sued the hospital trust for negligence in treatment. Medical expert evidence was obtained condemning the lack of blood thinning medication prescribed following discharge from hospital. Damages were approved by the judge at the High Court, Belfast.

The family thanked the medical negligence team for all their hard work in supporting them at inquest and also processing their claim so sensitively. If you have had a medical accident or medical treatment gone wrong, you may be entitled to make a personal injury claim for compensation.
