Overview
If you have been diagnosed with mesothelioma, you will require legal advice from a solicitor with expert knowledge and experience. Our specialist solicitors have over 20 years’ experience in asbestos litigation and are recognised as the most respected experts in the field.
Who Is At Risk Of Asbestos Exposure?
Asbestos exposure is typically associated with tradesmen and those who have worked in the building trade. However, there are numerous other ways in which people could be exposed, as asbestos can commonly be found in schools and other public buildings across Northern Ireland.
Those who worked between 1930 and 1980 are at particular risk, as asbestos was extensively used during this period. Although the use of asbestos is now banned, exposure can still occur today if asbestos-containing materials are disturbed in homes, schools or other buildings. Secondary asbestos exposure can also occur – for example, if fibres were carried home on work clothes, unintentionally putting family members at risk.
At HHD, we have represented clients across Northern Ireland who have previously worked in Belfast’s shipyard, in building firms throughout the country, and in various public buildings, such as schools and hospitals.
What Conditions Can Asbestos Cause?
Asbestosis – Fibrosis or scarring of the lungs, caused by exposure to asbestos dust. The condition develops slowly and can incapacitate the sufferer for a long period of years.
Mesothelioma – A form of cancer caused by exposure to asbestos dust, that affects the lining of the lungs, chest wall or abdomen. Almost 80% of cases of mesothelioma is cause by primary exposure to asbestos, but the development of the disease can take up to 30 to 40 years after first being exposed to asbestos dust.
Asbestos-Related Lung Cancer – There is also a known association between lung cancer and exposure to asbestos dust. People who have already developed asbestosis have a greater risk of contracting lung cancer.
Pleural Disorders – Asbestos exposure can cause pleural disorders, including pleural plaques (raised thickened areas visible on x-rays) and pleural thickening (scarring of the lung lining). These conditions can cause breathlessness and understandable concern about developing more serious illnesses in the future.
