Could workplace noise have damaged your hearing?

Noise induced hearing loss is one of the most common industrial diseases affecting employees who have worked in noisy environments such as manufacturing factories.

Employees who are regularly exposed to excessive noise without adequate protection can develop permanent hearing damage.  This can lead to difficulty following conversations, needing higher volumes on televisions or telephones and in many cases tinnitus – a persistent ringing or buzzing in the ears.

In Northern Ireland, employers have a legal duty to protect employees from excessive noise exposure.  This includes assessing workplace noise levels, providing appropriate hearing protection and ensuring that employees are properly trained in its use.  When those duties are not met and hearing damage occurs, employees may be entitled to bring a claim for compensation.

Hearing loss claims may often arise years after the exposure took place.  Courts recognise that the symptoms of noise induced hearing loss may develop gradually.

Employees who have spent time in noisy industrial environments sometimes only realise the extent of their hearing damage when undergoing a hearing test or when family members notice changes in their hearing.
