Driving Home For Christmas – Tips for Staying Safe on the Roads this Festive Season
According to the RAC, the Christmas period is statistically the busiest time of year on our roads. During the winter months, motorists not only have to contend with the increase in traffic, but also the often unpredictable and adverse weather conditions, all of which increase the likelihood of being involved in a road traffic accident. However, there are a few simple ways that we can all make our journeys safer and we have set out 15 tips below:
- Is the journey necessary? Do not venture out in cold and icy conditions unless it is absolutely essential. If possible, consider using public transport.
- Check all windows and mirrors are cleared and that lights are cleaned and working properly. REMEMBER do not using boiling water to clear ice from your windscreen as this may crack the glass.
- Check tyre tread and pressure – the deeper the thread, the more grip your tyres will have.
- Before leaving you house, check the water, oil, screen wash and anti-freeze levels.
- Keep an eye on the weather forecast and for any road closures or diversions.
- Ensure that you have full visibility from the driver’s seat and your view is not obstructed.
- Have a fully charged mobile phone in case of emergencies.
- Always carry a scraper and de-icer in your vehicle.
- Preparation is key! Be prepared for all eventualities. We hope that we never breakdown but keep an emergency box of supplies in your vehicle ‘just in case.’ This box should include a torch, blanket, gloves, snacks and water.
- Allow extra time for all journeys and practice safe driving techniques including appropriate braking distances and indicators.
- Expect the Unexpected – be vigilant and look out for pedestrians, cyclists and animals on the road.
- No matter what time of day it is, drive with your headlights on due to the increased darkness.
- When driving through snow and ice, remember to drive in higher gears to avoid wheel spin, EXCEPT when driving downhill when you should drive in a low gear.
- Sunglasses! Often forgot about and put in a cupboard once summer ends, sunglasses can be lifesavers in the winter. The sun is lower in the sky and therefore sun visors do not always block out the rays.
- Ensure you always have a valid insurance policy and breakdown cover.
